First Digital Art Sold On eBay
1999
In January, 1999 I launched coyoteyip.com with a project called An Experience Base - A Boolean Typhoon. In June, 1999 I wanted to exlore another facet of digital art, economy, and supposing that new artforms demanded new economic models I put this web project up for sale for $5 on eBay, the online classifieds/auction site. The Walker Art Center and Robbin Murphy bid on the work and Robbin closed the sale for $52.50 and sent me a nice green check. Being the first digital artwork sold on eBay, Matthew Mirapaul, arts journalist for the New York Times Online covered the sale in his arts&at;large column, An Attack on the Commercialization of Web Art, on July 8, 1999.
